Amazon Launch Thread-enabled Matter Update for Echo 4

Amazon has unveiled its highly anticipated software update for the Thread wireless protocol, bringing exciting new capabilities to the 4th generation Echo device. Through this update, the Echo 4 can now wireless connect directly to Matter-compatible products. According to Amazon’s developer blog, the software update has already commenced in the United States.

With the addition of Thread, the Amazon ecosystem now supports four wireless standards, including Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Thread. Acting as a Border Router, the Echo 4 seamlessly integrates Thread products into the home IP network using its Wi-Fi connection.

This update is particularly significant for companies like Eve Systems, as it significantly expands their potential customer base. Countless households already equipped with an Echo 4 can now easily pair their devices with Thread-enabled products such as Eve Energy, Eve Motion, and Eve Door & Window. Previously, these products were limited to compatibility with three out of the four Matter ecosystems: Apple Home, Google Home, and SmartThings. Amazon’s inclusion completes the ecosystem.

It’s worth noting that Eve Systems is likely to embrace other features within the Amazon ecosystem beyond the Matter standard. For instance, they plan to offer “Frustration Free Setup” (FFS) for all their products. FFS, a service provided by Amazon.com, digitally links purchased devices with the Echo at home prior to delivery. This enables immediate connectivity upon unboxing and powering up, eliminating the usual setup process involving codes and smartphones.

Eve Systems already supports FFS with their existing three Matter-enabled products. Additionally, Eve’s participation in the “Works with Alexa” (WWA) developer program ensures smooth operation and seamless integration with Amazon’s platform.
